A fine ceramic sculpture handmade and signed by Morgenstern. Depicting two figures in an embrace, one supporting the other, they sink and melt into each other’s weight. The layering of black and grey glazes gives the impression of glossy, heavy tar.
This piece is an intimate and bittersweet tribute to a moment I witnessed in the pottery studio, when an older woman suddenly fainted and collapsed in her daughter’s arms. Describing this moment, the daughter said that even though her mother was small, it suddenly felt like she weighed a million pounds. We held her and lowered her to the floor to wait for the paramedics’ arrival. Fortunately, she is okay now.
Inspired by Michelangelo’s unfinished Pieta, I tried to express the feeling of love, weight, and grief in the sudden reversal of the roles of mother and child. The mother figure seems to collapse into empty, liquid fabric as she melts into her daughter’s arms: their forms again becoming one, as in the start of life.
The unique sculpture is hollow and stands about 4“ tall.
